Once a woman has spent time at My Friend’s House and has utilized our services to stabilize herself after fleeing an abusive situation or relationship, our Transition Coordinator works hard to find appropriate and safe next-phase housing for women, and often, their children. This process has become much more challenging in recent years with the housing market increasing prices across our region. Finding an affordable rental unit for a single mom with children is almost impossible right now and it is very hard for any woman to afford rent upwards of $2,000 on her own.
Finding Home is a new project for My Friend’s House, made possible by our partnership with the United Way Simcoe Muskoka.
This three-year project has allowed us to increase our strategic capacity building internally to give more bandwidth for our Transition Coordinator to spend more time creating housing partnerships. This means meeting with local realtors and landlords about rental properties, as well as any other organizations and businesses that may have access to some transitional housing space for women in our care. We are working to educate as best we can so that more property owners can support our most vulnerable.
See our video below about our first partnership with Living Water Resorts here in Collingwood. We are working to transition women who are ready into units in their staff housing quarters and Living Waters is graciously offering employment opportunities to women who are interested in working on-site.
